Charcoal Poultice

Good Yeast
Boil a handful of hops in 3 pints of water; add 3 mashed boiled potatoes; strain, and mix with a cupful of flour; set aside to cool, and then add a tea-spoonful of sugar, and bottle up for use. A more permanent ferment is made by boiling a quantity of wheat-bran and hops in water; the decoction is not long in fermenting, and when this has taken place, throw in a sufficient portion of bran to form the whole into a thick paste, which work into balls, and afterward dry by a slow heat. When wanted for use, they are broken, and boiling water is poured upon them; having stood a proper time, the fluid is decanted, and in a fit state for leavening bread. Good Yeast

A double rolling pin was used simply to make the job of rolling out faster. A "modern" convenience with the Shaker women : ) Some double pins had cuts in them to make a Norwegian potatoe bread called "lefse". I believe there are a couple of companies that now make double pins, some in ceramic. I do like the kitchen you have posted here. Nowadays, kitchens seem more to be all about looks than practicality.
Love the kitchen photos. Looks like a dream kitchen to me. I agree that kitchens aren't made to work in any more, although, ours gets a big workout every day whether it's convenient or not.:-) Charcoal is an amazing substance that is useful for many things. I was glad to see the info on it here. Every household and homestead should have it on hand.
I believe the double pin avoids pastry wrap around.. I did a tour in Massachusetts when holidaying in the states a couple of years back... now I am seeking one withion the UK, but the shakers own the patent and I don't believe they export. :)
